When you MIG weld, there are two different ways you can pick. With gas or without gas. We know that the welding technique remians almost the exact same between the two while different filler wire. So, what's the difference between them?
Gas-shielded MIG welding
This welding method requires an external gas to protect the weld pll from the atmosphere and other ouside contaminants. The gas generally is an Arco2 mix.
Gasless Mig welding
If weld gasless, users need to use flux-cored filler wire. Because the flux inside the wire melts when welding, it release gases to protect the pool, which bubbles to the surface to form slag over the weld. This is the reseaon that gasless welding is called "self-shielded" welding.
Differences between them
Polarity
Using different polarities is the important difference between them. Setting the welding machine to DCEP(positive polarity) when using gasmethod, and setting the welding machine to DCEN(negative polarity) when using gasless method.
Fumes
Due to all the things in the flux that work to protect the weld, gasless method creates a lot more fumes than gas method.
Outside/Inside
Thanks to gasless welding without a gas cylinder when working, it isn't affected by enviroment. So it's perfect for you to choose gasless welding when you have to work outdoors. It must be mentioned here that you'better to use a fan to blow the fumes away.
Metal prep
To weld, cleaning the metal is the first step. However, if you had to weld through paint and rust, gasless method is better than gas method. Of course, just because you can doesn't mean you necessarily should.
Whether you choose gas welding or gasless welding, protecting yourself is the most important thing. Based on this, auto darkening welding helmet is the best choice for you.
